The beach walk – a poem

The beach walk

The sea’s sure sings your name
I hear it as I walk
As we used to walk
Along the beach
Not long ago

I remember the salt smell
The wind gentle in its telling
And your stride slowing
As you said hello to those
You did not know

Your smile leapt to them
Then swept back again
And captured the terrain
Of dogs on leashes
And babies in prams
Led by owners
Or parents

The sun smiled
And saw all was good
And you knew
You talked to me of futures
Without you
You knew
The sun would not smile
One day

And yet, it does
For me
Because of you
And for you,
Because of me,
In memory and memoriam
Of love,
And thanks, old man
