Socialism is much more than public ownership of productive enterprises. Still, if there is one policy that clearly distinguishes socialists from their (or rather our) opponents, it is support for public enterprise as a way of organizing large-scale production, and, in particular, as the preferred model for industries characterized by natural monopoly or other major market failures. The opposite view, dominant since the 1970s, is the market liberal framework that favors comprehensive private ownership, with “light-handed” regulation as the response to market “imperfections”.

States quickly agree on approval for more work to be done on National Energy Guarantee. But concerns remain about the emissions target, and new analysis that suggests the electricity sector is being asked to address just 5 per cent of required reductions.

Polling shows 80% of voters support efficiency standards for rental homes, which should encourage the Victorian government to finally deliver this critical reform as part of its review of rental laws.

In the first three months of this year, the official jobs figures tell us, 400,000 more people were in work in Australia than a year earlier. And roughly 300,000 of them were in full-time work.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics adds that the pace of job growth is now slowing sharply — as well it might. On those figures, we added one new job last year for every thirty we already had. That’s almost twice our long-term average pace of jobs growth. It’s astonishing.

Given the electricity sector accounts for around one-third of national emissions, it must be asked why the government is only seeking to achieve 5% of the required abatement from the NEM.
