Why did Turnbull dump the proposed GST increase?

It was of course going to be the magic pudding for big business and the States and Territories – an extra $33 billion a year flowing into Commonwealth coffers as a result of increasing the GST from 10% to 15%. There was only one real problem – we punters were opposed to it. So opposed in fact that the popular Turnbull government might if it went to an election with the proposal lose what appears so far to be the unlosable election later this year.

Socialist group Solidarity have just issued this statement on one way forward for the refugee movement.  Among other things we say:

‘Socialists have long argued that a mass campaign of meetings, rallies and grassroots organising can raise awareness, shift public opinion and build the forces to change policy.

UP TO 500 people attended the Invasion Day Protest in Garema Place in Canberra on 26 January to highlight the genocide then and now against Aboriginal people. There was not one mention, not one photo of the protest in The Canberra Times.
