The Galaxy marginal seats polling

Larvatus Prodeo - August 14, 2010 - 11:46pm

Courtesy of GhostWhoVotes, the full results of Galaxy’s marginal seat polling, which will be published in tomorrow’s News Limited tabloids, can be found here.

Let me make a number of points first, which I’ll illustrate with reference to the Queensland seats:

(a) It’s not “the biggest poll ever” – it’s a series of polls of marginal seats in different states, each with a sample of 800 covering a number of electorates. The aggregate numbers at state and national level would be meaningless.

(b) What’s crucial in interpreting the findings is which seats have been surveyed, and the fact that where (as with Queensland) there are 4 sampled, the individual seat samples are tiny. Additionally, if the seats are geographically and demographically diverse, reading too much into the aggregate of the marginals can be misleading.

Let’s take a look at Queensland, by way of illustration. Read more »

A Wild West take on mental health policy dramas

Croakey Health Blog - August 10, 2010 - 11:34am

Professor Alan Rosen, a psychiatrist who has been a longstanding advocate for better community-based mental health care, has turned to the Western genre for help in interpreting the warring policies and factions in mental health.

Rosen writes:

“If we were replaying how the wild west was won, community mental health services could be in the role of the bison, quietly becoming almost extinct as the invading frontiersmen and the incumbents shoot it out.

Self-annointed Tin-star Tony Abbott and his health spokesman side-kick Dead-eye Dutton partially got the message, and have usefully targeted  the mental health needs of young people.

But  they continue to ignore the disabling  state of mental health services  for other phases of mental illness and other age-groups. Read more »

The election health debate (continues here…

Croakey Health Blog - August 11, 2010 - 6:17pm

Croakey, as regular readers will know, has been dishing it up to the Rudd/Gillard Government on its health reform agenda for some time now.

Croakey is in the unfortunate position of being something of a perfectionist and an idealist (not a combination I’d wish on anyone), which means there have been many disappointments along the health reform journey over the last few years.

But credit where credit is due. Health Minister Nicola Roxon deserves acknowledgement for speaking a truth today, during her National Press Club debate with her Opposition counterpart Peter Dutton, that many in the health and medical lobby find unpalatable.

It’s a truth that not many health ministers or politicians manage to utter at any time, let alone in the thick of an election campaign, and especially one where the AMA is seeking to make medical rebates an election issue. Read more »

Election Caption Contest #2: Results

GroupThink - July 28, 2010 - 5:32pm

It is time for caption contest results. Before the getting to the winner a couple of special mentions.

Molesworth: Joe Hockey teaches the joys of capitalism by demonstrating the positive side of email spam.

Simon N: Dickson, Joe, they asked what we’d do to improve their electorate of Dickson.

Simon almost had two in a row, but he was knocked off by this cracker by Duncan:

The Coalition’s health agenda: protect doctors’ incomes

Larvatus Prodeo - July 21, 2010 - 12:35pm

What’s at stake in health in this year’s election is summed up neatly in an article in the Brisbane Times this morning on the performance of one of the government’s GP super clinics, operating in Strathpine on Brisbane’s northern outskirts.

Local doctors are complaining that they’re losing patients because the centre bulk bills. It’s political, claim the medicos. Local MP Peter Dutton, the opposition’s shadow on health, wants to see the centre shut down.

Update: In other news, Tony Abbott promises parents a tax rebate on private school fees. Read more »
