Today the ABS released the latest labour force numbers. I haven’t done a full post on the number for a couple month due to the election, so let’s have a look and see how we’re doing.

First off, the numbers scream “ignore the seasonally adjusted rate”. On seasonally adjusted terms the unemployment rate in September actually fell from 5.8% to 5.6%.

On Friday, The Australian Financial Review reported that Hockey was “mulling” the idea of separately classifying debt the federal government raises to invest in infrastructure projects from the debt required to finance the budget deficit.

Personally I did not understand a word of this when I read it for the first time.

All that needs to be asked comes down, I think, to three questions. Is Robbo more likely to win the 2015 election than Nathan Rees? Is Albo more likely to win the 2016 election than Bill Shorten? And, in what …

In his weekend report on the high incidence of rape committed by taxi drivers against female passengers, Fairfax crime reporter John Silvester tells us that we need to address “the elephant in the room. Most (but not all) of the reports we have received say that the offending drivers were overseas-born students.” Staring at this elephant in the face means that “the cravat-wearers will splutter on their croissants and declare this story racist.”

Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott has picked just one woman for his 19-member cabinet, to be sworn in tomorrow. In defending his choice he declared he was prioritising stability, experience and merit.

So Crikey decided to have a go. Is it so very hard to select a Coalition cabinet which meets these requirements, but is not 95% male?

During the election campaign, most mornings, the first site I looked at was the Press Display to see what the front pages were like.  Obviously they were mostly awful. But for future reference and for your edification here are the front pages of The Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail, Herald Sun, Advertiser, The Oz and Sunday Version thereof of every day of the campaign when the front page had a story about the election.

This last day of the campaign saw Kevin Rudd start off early by attacking the Liberal Party over its release of its child care policy last night.

Yep, child care. No one cares about, so of course you would release it without any fan fair…

Australia. Don’t fucking ruin it for everyone. Sometime in the next couple of days you are all going to do that weird dance with the little cardboard houses and the scrawling of runes on scrolls, and like a magical phoenix sewn from boredom and Windsor knots, a new government will be formed. According to what I’ve read in the newspapers owned by one guy, and seen in the polling of people his age who still have hand-cranked telephones, enough of you are going to vote for Liberal or National candidates that Tony Abbott will be installed as Prime Minister.

What I really, really wonder is whether you’ve thought this through.

Well today we had Kevin Rudd giving his final speech at the National Press Club.

He made some good noises that went to Tony Abbott’s line about Australia not getting above its station.

Ben Chifley had ideas above his station when he dared to dream of Australian citizenship rather than simply being a British subject.

Gough Whitlam had ideas above his station when he made university access available to all, based on merit.

The last period of this election is rather different to 2010. I had a look back at my election posts from the last election and saw that on the final Wednesday there was the people's forum n Brisbane. This time round, Tony Abbott has no desire at this late stage to do anything that might risk his position in front.

Back then the Liberal Party costings were also an issue. They actually released them on the last Wednesday, so even with the Parliamentary Budget Office the Liberal Party has not been able to improve on that low bar.

Here's the game plan. Abbott is foreshadowing that if he wins the election he will call a double dissolution if Labor blocks his plans to undo carbon pricing. By Labor he means the Senate. If he can call one quickly enough, while Labor is in disarray and he is riding high in the polls, exploit the division in the electorate, he might be able to control both houses of parliament.

So last night Kevin Rudd on QANDA was good. Real good. Sort of, where the bloody hell have been for 4 weeks, good.

The questions were decidedly not soft ball ones. There was some if not angry, pretty miffed people in the audience and they wanted their say. He also had Tony Jones sitting next to him. And I don’t know if Rudd once ran over Jones's foot in the ABC car park or something, but Jones didn’t seem particularly enamoured with Rudd.

And then Rudd talked about same sex marriage.

No doubt you’ve all seen it, but here it is anyway:
