I am of the school of thought that markets like to fill gaps. When large daily moves transpire, the market tends to reverse and then fill the large moves with smaller moves in the same direction. It is a little disconcerting when this happens, but the resumption of the trend fills the gaps with more The post Stocks gap into the gaps appeared first on MacroBusiness. |

In yesterday’s blog post I analysed the historical evidence for sophomore surge having an impact in Australian federal elections, dating back to 1998. “Sophomore surge” refers to the phenomenon of a first-term MP performing relatively better than other candidates for their party, doubly so if they defeated a former MP from another party at the previous election. I found that the evidence is clear, although the effect is not enormous. Other factors remain more important, but the personal vote can create a skew in the pattern of swings. |

The Easter ceasefire has come and gone, with Russia and Ukraine trading accusations over thousands of violations as fighting resumes across the front lines – yet another reminder of how difficult it is to bring this war to an end. Amid the renewed hostilities, Donald Trump’s long-promised peace plan is colliding with geopolitical realities.

Most credible researchers believe immigration affects house prices. The questions are: how muchs, and at what cost? Peter Dutton’s Opposition has promised to cut Australian immigration by a quarter “to tackle the housing crisis“. Is migration is putting pressure on housing prices? And will a 25 per cent migration cut relieve that pressure? |

I have referenced the concept of “personal vote” and “sophomore surge” quite a few times during this campaign, and in the past, but I thought it would be useful to actually collect data and analyse how much of an effect we can detect from the swings data. |

Having finished off the Easter eggs (or bunnies/bilbies) and Hot Cross Buns (though these are a year-round thing now), I ought to be turning attention back to what’s happening in the world. But that’s too depressing to look at, a view our aspiring leaders have endorsed by resolutely ignoring anything more geopolitical than the price of petrol. |

Speaking at a press conference in Sydney on Saturday morning, holding up a jar of Vegemite, the prime minister declared he had achieved a “win for Australian industry” after his government’s discussions with the Canadian government.

The unplumbed depths of Peter Dutton cynical politics should be a matter of deep concern to genuine political conservatives across Australia. Whoever those people are (at present they appear to be in hiding), its time they distanced themselves from what the Liberal Party is becoming under Duttons leadership.
