Prime Minister-elect Tony Abbott has picked just one woman for his 19-member cabinet, to be sworn in tomorrow. In defending his choice he declared he was prioritising stability, experience and merit.

So Crikey decided to have a go. Is it so very hard to select a Coalition cabinet which meets these requirements, but is not 95% male?

Here's the game plan. Abbott is foreshadowing that if he wins the election he will call a double dissolution if Labor blocks his plans to undo carbon pricing. By Labor he means the Senate. If he can call one quickly enough, while Labor is in disarray and he is riding high in the polls, exploit the division in the electorate, he might be able to control both houses of parliament.

But I rather had to knock this piece together on the day, so this is it, as performed at the Brisbane Writers Festival.

Or else it's a sad indictment of the numeracy skills of the political journalists who left this claim unchallenged.

Update: On Lateline last night he said it was 4 million. Must have had a busy day.
